Job Description The Sociology Instructor will be responsible for teaching a full academic load each semester. Teaching assignments will include all Sociology courses and any other related courses found in the academic discipline. The position is responsible for student recruitment and advising, academic program development and division participation, committee and task force service, and individual professional development.
Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA’s/Required Qualifications Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Sociology and/or related academic disciplines is required.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Prepares and delivers content on all of the offerings in Sociology courses as assigned. Teaching includes preparation, delivery, and assessment for a full-time teaching load, which is currently 15 hours. Some teaching responsibilities may occur during required office hours when faculty are expected to advise students in their majors and courses.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and application of cultural competence pedagogy within the discipline.
  • Maintains office hours for students seeking advice (Academic advising of students) on class work, assignments, papers, and others.
  • Compiles, administers, evaluates and grades students’ class work, assignments, tests, and papers; and keeps students informed about their progress by observation and informs them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement.
  • Advises and counsels students in academic and career fields through mentoring and tutoring.
  • Maintains accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Provides service/outreach in the college and community by serving on college, division, and departmental committees, by participating in student activities, and by participating in scholarly activities in the community.
  • Attends all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Vice President or Dean.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
  • Participates in departmental and college committees; and provides outreach service to the community.
  • May perform other duties as assign by Vice President/Dean.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of a college academic environment.
  • Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate student-centered learning; experience interacting successfully with academically and culturally diverse student populations.
  • Proficient in technology related to the functions of teaching, the department, and the college. Such technology includes computer skills, current learning management system, Microsoft Office 365 and associated apps like Outlook email, Teams, SharePoint, etc.
  • Exhibits a proven commitment to equity.
  • Ability to interact and work with academically and culturally diverse population.
  • Skill in active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
