Position description

The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State seeks an outstanding faculty member, who brings a distinguished record of professional experience, to become the College’s next Norman Eberly Professor of Practice in Journalism and Editorial Director for newsroom operations in the College’s new media center, opening in the fall. The appointment will begin in September.

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of professor of practice to a multi-year, non-tenure line contract. They will bring professional credentials as a reporter, writer and/or editor and will have a national reputation for excellence; will be able to strengthen partnerships with professionals and organizations; and will be able to lead and inspire faculty and student media operations to collaborate in a multi-platform news operation that serves the community and Commonwealth while providing students with professional experience in a “teaching hospital” environment.

As editorial director for newsroom operations, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to build programs that involve the College’s current student media operations, a highly engaged and expert faculty, and aspiring student journalists in our new, state-of-the-art media center in the heart of campus. We seek an individual who is forward-looking, collaborative and entrepreneurial and who has operational acumen.

Applicants should bring at least 15 years of current, relevant industry experience to the position, including management experience. Teaching experience is preferred. Experience securing grants and working with foundations is also preferred.

The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications is among the largest nationally accredited undergraduate programs in the country. The College is home to four departments: Advertising/Public Relations; Film Production and Media Studies; Journalism; and Telecommunications and Media Industries. Faculty members in the Department of Journalism possess a blend of academic and professional credentials and publish in academic journals and the professional press. They also teach in high-quality programs in-residence and online.
