General Statement of Duties: The Behavioral Sciences Department at Fitchburg State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of sociology. Candidates should be committed to excellence in teaching and prepared to teach and develop a wide range of courses in sociology. Specifically, we welcome candidates with expertise in Quantitative Research Methods, Medical Sociology, Drugs and Alcohol, Sociology of Aging, Sociology of Disability, and Environmental Sociology. The candidate also will have opportunities to teach summer and winter terms, online and undergraduate evening courses. A PhD is required for this position.

Responsibilities:
The teaching load is twenty four semester hours of credit of instruction per school year, usually taught as four, three credit courses per semester.

Contribute to the sociology program’s identity and practices in the areas of social justice and social inequality, especially by race, class, and gender

Instructional responsibilities include courses in Quantitative Research Methods, Medical Sociology, Drugs and Alcohol, Sociology of Aging, Sociology of Disability, and Environmental Sociology.

Provide academic advising to sociology majors

Participate in curriculum review and development, program review, and student outcomes assessment

Attend university functions, including commencement and convocation, as well as faculty, committee and departmental meetings

Participate in scheduled orientation and registration programs

Continuing scholarship and professional activities, which may include research, publishing, and conference presentations; contributing to professional organizations and societies; public service; and service to the professional growth and development of the university community

Opportunities to teach summer and winter terms, online and undergraduate and graduate evening courses.

Qualifications

A PhD in sociology or a related field

Commitment to excellence in teaching, demonstrated teaching experience appropriate to the level of appointment, and evidence of scholarly activity

Ability to utilize advances in technology and software in teaching

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student body

Experience developing curriculum and course material inclusive of underrepresented groups is preferred.

Evidence of serving, and/or research related to diverse, multicultural populations is also preferred.

Ability to involve undergraduate students in research preferred

Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI) as well as a completed background check satisfactory to the university.
