POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Political Science Department invites applications for the Class of 1960 Distinguished Visiting Professor of National Security position to begin as early as December 2021. USNA is a service academy and top tier liberal arts college with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in faculty teaching and research. Past incumbents have been recognized and seasoned national security experts who have added perspective and depth to their students’ academic experience. An important aspect of this position is that we are seeking a candidate with significant experience at the highest levels of national security, government, civil-military relations, diplomacy, or international relations.

Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate teaching and an ability to lead upper level political science courses related to topics such as: civil-military relations, environmental security, international law, regional security, terrorism, cybersecurity, executive privilege, arms proliferation and arms control. Among the position’s objectives are assisting midshipmen with research, offering seminars and lectures across the Department and the Naval Academy, and inviting guest speakers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach at a minimum two sections of upper-level political science electives related to the incumbent’s expertise in national security.

Advise and mentor midshipmen from diverse backgrounds with research, to include honors program students as appropriate.

Coordinate lectures and guest speakers for both the Political Science Department and the Naval Academy.

This is a 10-month federal excepted service position with an initial two year academic appointment, with the potential to renew for an additional two years. Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
A master’s degree in political science or closely related field

Experience at the highest levels of national security, government, civil-military relations, diplomacy, or international relations.

Preferred:
Ph.D. in political science or closely related field, or J.D.

U.S. Citizenship Required

All Civilian Faculty Positions at USNA are subject to a background investigation. The selectee’s failure to meet this requirement will be grounds for termination.
