General Description of Position

Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Dean, the Instructor, Sociology, is responsible for instructing students in various Sociology courses in a classroom, online, and/or distance learning setting and will include dual-credit classes at The Career Academy (TCA). Teaching assignments for this position include, but are not limited to: Introduction to Sociology, Gender in Contemporary Society, Issues of Unity and Diversity, Diversity and Society, and Marriage and the Family. The instructor develops course objectives, implements varied teaching strategies, advises students, monitors and evaluates student progress and keeps accurate student records.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide Instruction in Assigned Subject Areas:
Provide instruction to students according to the objectives of each course assigned.

Teach courses in Sociology which may include, but are not limited to: Introduction to Sociology, Women in Contemporary Society, Issues of Unity and Diversity, Diversity and Society, and Marriage and the Family.

This instructor will utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom that are appropriate to individual student needs and may include, but are not limited to: multimedia presentations and computed aided instruction, lecture, engaged learning experiences, small groups, and demonstrations.

Teaching assignments will include dual-credit (high school/college credit) classes for high school students on-site at The Career Academy and potentially other locations or via distance learning.

Provide for Student Evaluation and Record Keeping:
Prepare and administer evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.

Provide data for department and division assessment.

Remain Current in Events and Developments Related to Subject Areas:

Increase and improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through supplemental sources such as in-service activities, conferences, workshops, technical updates, and personal self-study.

Participate in advising training and updates.

Participate in Division and College Meetings and Committees

Attend division/college staff meetings and serve on committees.

Serve as an Academic Advisor for Students:
Serve as an Academic Advisor to Academic Transfer Program students. Tasks included in this area are: assist students in selecting and registering for courses; advise students on their academic progress, courses needed for graduation, and division/college policies and procedures; and generally serve as the first line of communication between students and the college staff.

Develop/Revise Course Curriculum and Educational Material:
In cooperation with other faculty, develop and/or revise course objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies on approved college curriculum form.

In addition, the instructor will develop, revise and maintain classroom policies, grading structures, and strategies.

This instructor will review, evaluate and recommend textbooks for course use.

The instructor will participate in the collection and analysis of data for department assessment of student learning.

Function as a Member of the Arts and Sciences Division Team:
Interact with colleagues, students, staff, and supervisors in a manner which will project a positive image of the Academic Transfer Program/Arts and Sciences Division and the College and which promotes/facilitates instructional services such as recruitment, placement, and orientation as assigned.

Perform Other Functions Related to Teaching Assignments.

Provide information and data that will assist in preparation of supply and equipment orders, course schedules, book orders, and other necessary reports.

The instructor may have additional duties and responsibilities of supervising and coordinating the activities of the program and its faculty if assigned to be Program Director/Department Chair. The primary role of the Program Director/Department Chair is to ensure that through personal and faculty efforts, students are able to achieve the objectives of the program. The Program Director reports to the Dean or Associate Dean of the Division.

Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors):
Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction. Professional Development Faculty should work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan of professional development and improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 hours of graduate coursework in Sociology.

Teaching experience equivalent to 18 semester hours or 6 academic courses/sections at secondary or post-secondary level that applies directly to area(s) of instructional responsibility.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in teaching with technology, i.e., Internet, Interactive T.V., smartboards, lecture capture, and computer based instruction.

Certification or certification eligibility to teach dual-credit courses.

Experience in teaching online/hybrid courses.

Experience utilizing engaged learning techniques.

Experience teaching at community colleges.

Salary

$51,500/yr
