Position Description:

NYU’s Washington, DC Academic Center is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate politics course for upper-level undergraduate students. The course will be under the sponsorship of NYU’s College of Arts and Science.

The course is expected for Spring 2022 (late January to mid May). The class meeting pattern for this 4 credit course will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute office hour per instruction day, during which the instructor will be available to meet with students. The instructor must be prepared to deliver course content remotely if conditions do not allow in-person instruction.

Course Description:

This course surveys the politics and history of the Middle East contextualized starting from the Late Ottoman Period and into the present. The focus is on the political, social and intellectual trends involved in the process of modernization and reform in the Middle East. General topics include the Ottoman Empire and its decline, the impact of European imperialism and colonialism, programs of modernization and reform, the construction of nationalism and national identities, Islamism, development and contemporary approaches to modernity. In addition, focus will be paid on the dynamics of the Arab Spring as well as protests in Iran.

Qualifications

A strong candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent training in a relevant field, as well as experience teaching courses at the undergraduate level within a degree-granting program. Government, NGO or non-profit experience in Washington, DC would be a plus factor for qualified candidates.
