THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND CRIMINOLOGY AT STONEHILL COLLEGE invites applicants for an assistant professor, tenure-track appointment in Criminology to begin in July 2022. Our new colleague would join a department of faculty with a wide range of disciplinary expertise and a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in their classrooms. The department consists of five Criminology, four Sociology, and two Anthropology full time faculty positions. The Sociology and Criminology Department offers a program that builds important skills such as systematic observation, critical thinking, and writing competence, to best prepare students to understand and resolve societal issues of justice. It is closely associated with the Martin Institute for Law & Society that provides our students with interdisciplinary learning opportunities for accomplishing Stonehill’s mission of educating the whole person so that each Stonehill graduate thinks, acts, and leads with courage toward the creation of a more just and compassionate world.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

We seek enthusiastic applicants who are committed to excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduates, have a demonstrated awareness of the importance of diversity and social justice in education, and exemplify the teacher-scholar model with a clear understanding of how to integrate vibrant teaching, research, and student engagement. The teaching load for tenure track faculty is 3 courses per semester. Successful candidates will be ready and able to teach key departmental classes such as Critical Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminological Theories, and Research Methods for Criminology. Preference will be given to the candidates who are willing and able to teach Research Methods. We are particularly interested in candidates with areas of research expertise that complement existing departmental strengths.

Education and/or Experience

Applicants should have a completed Ph.D. in criminology, criminal justice, or sociology (with a clear focus in criminology). ABD candidates will be considered based on experience and a firm schedule to finish the degree by August 2022. Candidates who enhance the department’s diversity are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants are asked to complete the online application and also provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, one example of your scholarly work and a teaching portfolio. The teaching portfolio should include evidence of teaching experience, course syllabi (ideally one for either Criminological Theories, Critical Introduction to Criminal Justice, or Research Methods for Criminology), and a statement of teaching philosophy. In your teaching philosophy statement, please explain how diversity and social justice are incorporated into your teaching materials and methods. Applicants will also be asked to provide reference information to obtain letter of references.
