The School of Education at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz is pleased to announce a search for one tenure-track faculty position in Literacy Education, at the level of either Assistant or Associate Professor. This faculty will teach in a program preparing Literacy specialists at the master’s level. We are seeking a colleague with teaching experience and expertise within the domain of Literacy Education, with a focus in one or more of the following areas: Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Digital Literacies, Young Adult & Children’s Literature, Literacy Instruction for Multi-Lingual/Multi-Cultural Learners, and/or the Science of Reading.

It is our goal to hire an exceptional scholar-practitioner with a record of commitment to the academic success of ethnically/racially/socioeconomically diverse students and engagement in scholarly activity and service. This position is represented by United University Professionals (UUP) and would begin August 2025.

Duties at the Assistant and Associate Professor Levels:

  • Teach and advise students in the graduate Literacy Education program, as well as advise students in an undergraduate teacher preparation program. The regular teaching load is three 3-credit courses a semester (or the equivalent).
  • Contribute to scholarship in literacy education through research, publications, and presentations at regional, national, and international meetings.
  • Provide service to the department, university, and local community by serving on School of Education and University committees, continue and establish partnerships with local school districts, and regularly contribute to curriculum and professional development activities with and for teacher candidates.

QualificationsRequired qualifications at the Assistant professor level:

  • An earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Literacy Education or a closely related field by August 2024. Exceptional ABD candidates with a firm completion date will be considered.
  • Understand the International Literacy Association (|LA) Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals (2017) and the New York State requirements for certification in literacy education.
  • Deep understanding of the quantitative and qualitative research, theoretical frameworks, assessments, and pedagogical strategies and practices for teaching reading, writing, and literacies, with the content knowledge to teach graduate-level courses in the Literacy program.
  • Ability to teach classes in multiple delivery formats, including in-person, hybrid, synchronous online, and asynchronous online.
  • Hold or be eligible to hold state licensure in literacy education in any state.

Additional Required Qualifications at the Associate Professor Level:

  • Previous appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor at an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated research agenda with a record of peer-reviewed publication and presentation in the applicant’s specialization(s) within the field of Literacy Education.
  • Active participation in one or more relevant Literacy Education professional organizations (e.g., ALER,ILA, LRA, AERA, etc.).
  • Minimum of seven years of experience of effective teaching in a graduate literacy education program

Preferred Qualifications for both levels:

  • At least three years of prior experience teaching as a literacy specialist or literacy coach in public and/or private schools in grades PK-12.
  • Experience supervising teachers or teacher candidates in literacy assessment, intervention plan writing and implementation, and progress-monitoring data collection.
  • Experience supervising graduate candidates within a university-based literacy clinic setting.
  • Experience teaching synchronous and asynchronous online classes.
