General Summary
Position:
Western Michigan University’s College of Education and Human Development invites applications for the position of Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Higher Education. The individual in this position will serve in the Educational, Organizational and Global Leadership (EOGL) unit within the Department of Educational Leadership, Research, and Technology at Western Michigan University (WMU). The EOGL unit is comprised of a diverse suite of academic programs including a PhD in Higher Education Leadership, a PhD in Organizational Analysis Leadership, a MA in Higher Education and Student Affairs Leadership, a MA in Global Leadership and Learning, an undergraduate minor in Leadership for Social Change, and graduate certificate programs with focus areas in higher education and student affairs leadership and global leadership and learning.
We seek to hire someone who can fill needed content expertise areas (higher education finance, law/policy, and/or governance), and provide new energy and perspectives related to teaching; recruiting, retaining, and advising students; and research. This individual will also serve on committees for doctoral students in the various programs across our department, with a particular focus on higher education leadership PhD committees. To attain and keep graduate faculty status (which is required to teach in a graduate program at the institution), this individual will be required to maintain an active research agenda. Ideally, this faculty member should have connections with thought leaders in the profession, as well as in professional associations in the field of higher education.
The individual in this position will also be expected to teach courses, maintain office hours, and support program initiatives on campus, in-person in Kalamazoo, Michigan. - Major Duties
- Serve as instructor of record for higher educational leadership courses beginning late August 2025.
- Maintain an active research agenda in higher education leadership, with preferred areas in higher education finance, law & policy, and/or governance in higher education.
- Advise master’s and doctoral students in the various programs in the unit/department as needed.
- Participate in recruiting initiatives of future undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students.
- Support curricular improvement efforts and development of new curricula and programs within the department as needed.
- Engage in service to the unit, department, college, and university, as well as to the profession of higher education leadership more broadly.
- Minimum Qualifications
- Earned doctoral degree (Ph.D./Ed.D.) in higher education leadership or closely related field from an accredited institution (ABD considered, if earned at time of application submission, degree conferred by start date).
- Active research agenda related to higher education leadership (including the content areas of higher education finance, law/policy, and/or governance).
- Evidence of prior publications and/or presentations at national and/or international conferences.
- Record of active professional involvement (e.g., professional associations) in the field of higher education.
- Passion for and demonstrated commitment to improving the educational opportunities and outcomes of ethnically, culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse communities, with a key focus on inclusion, equity, and social justice.
- Experience supporting adult learners and diverse populations, including second language learners.
- Desired Qualifications
- Expertise in quantitative research methods.
- Previous graduate-level university teaching experience in content areas including higher education finance, law/ policy, and/or governance.
- Leadership experience in professional associations in the field of higher education.
- Prior professional administrative experience in higher education.
- Professional experience in international settings (e.g., teaching, consulting, and research).
- Prior experience advising graduate students.
- Prior experience as chair and/or committee member of doctoral dissertations.
