Job Description: Mackinac Island Town Crier and The St. Ignace News Reporter

Position Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Mackinac Island Town Crier and St. Ignace News Reporter. This unique role combines the responsibilities of a Town Crier and a News reporter to deliver important news and events happening in the Straits of Mackinac region and Eastern Upper Peninsula. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, a passion for storytelling, and a deep understanding of the local community.

Responsibilities:

Town Crier Duties:

  • Serve as the official voice of the community, making public announcements of significant events, festivals, and community gatherings.

  • Utilize excellent written and engaging delivery techniques to capture the attention of the public and ensure important messages are heard.

  • Maintain a professional appearance and dress in appropriate attire as a representative of the town and its traditions.

News Reporting:

  • Gather and research local news stories in the Mackinac Island, St. Ignace, and outlying coverage areas, including community events, government activities, and other topics of interest.

  • Conduct interviews with local residents, community leaders, and other relevant sources to gather information for news stories.

  • Write clear, concise, and engaging news articles for publication in various media outlets, including print, online, and social media platforms.

  • Adhere to ethical journalism practices, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in reporting.

Content Creation:

  • Create multimedia content, such as short videos, to enhance news coverage and engage a broader audience.

  • Capture and edit photographs to accompany news articles and add visual appeal to storytelling.

  • Utilize social media platforms to share news updates, engage with the community, and promote the Straits of Mackinac area and St. Ignace.

Community Engagement:

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community members, local organizations, and government officials.

  • Attend community events and meetings to stay informed about local happenings and build a network of contacts.

  • Act as a liaison between the community and the media organization, addressing questions and concerns from the public.

Requirements:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt writing style to various media formats. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills to conduct interviews, build relationships, and engage with the community.

  • Knowledge of journalistic principles and ethics.

  • Familiarity with multimedia content creation, including photography and video editing.

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, including attending and contributing in the office and helping others when needed.

  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by the news cycle and community events.

  • Familiarity with the Mackinac and St. Ignace areas and a genuine interest in their history, culture, and current affairs.

Note: The Town Crier component of this role may involve physical activity, including standing for extended periods and delivering newspapers without the use of an automobile. Please consider this when applying.

Experience:

  • Journalism: 1 year (Preferred)
