Unemployment in Turkey rises by 54 percent in last year

According to statistics released by the Turkish Employment Agency (İŞKUR), the unemployment rate in Turkey has increased by 54 percent since January 2018.

As of January 2019 there were 3,775,000 registered unemployed in the country, Euronews reported on Tuesday. At the same time last year the number was 2,457,000, indicating that 1,318,000 more people became unemployed in the last 12 months.

January 2019 saw an increase of 266,000 in the number of unemployed, corresponding to a 7.6 percent monthly increase in unemployment.

The figures reflect only people who are registered with the state employment agency.

The Euronews report also stated that since the last elections in Turkey in June 2018, over 1 million people have become unemployed due to a deteriorating economy.
