TITLE AND LOCATION

Assistant Professor Food and Agricultural Economics

Located in the Department of Applied Economics, Twin Cities Campus, University of Minnesota.

This is a nine-month, 100% time (50% research and 50% teaching) position.

Applicants for this position must have completed their PhD by the time of appointment.

PROGRAM / UNIT DESCRIPTION

The Department of Applied Economics offers highly ranked programs of study at the undergraduate, MS, and PhD levels. The department has research centers that strengthen the academic programs and provide opportunities for students and faculty in research, policy, and industry outreach. The department has distinguished faculty, many of whom have won international, national, and University awards for outstanding research, teaching, service, and outreach. Faculty work in a variety of fields, broadly defined as Food and Agricultural Economics, Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Trade and Development Economics, and the Economics of the Public Sector. The department is home to several food-related centers including the Center for International Food and Agricultural Policy (CIFAP), the Center for Farm Financial Management (CFFM), and the International Science and Technology Policy and Practice (InSTePP) Center. The department is located in a diverse metropolitan area, home to a large agribusiness and food sector, and in the center of a diverse agricultural production region. This proximity offers unique opportunities to address economic, policy, and business issues related to agriculture and food.

This position reflects interest from undergraduate and graduate students within our programs and across the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

DESCRIPTION: This position includes responsibilities for research, teaching, and leadership related to Food and Agricultural Economics (F&AE) with a strong emphasis in the application of econometric methods to food and agricultural issues. Possible areas of specialization within F&AE include (i) agricultural finance, (ii) agricultural risk management, (iii) the economics of food, health and nutrition, (iv) the economics of food insecurity, and (v) public policy as it relates to the F&AE areas just enumerated. We expect the successful candidate to:

Develop a leading research program on issues that directly impact consumer, farm, firm household, government, or nonprofit decisions related to F&AE. This includes publishing articles in leading peer-reviewed journals, obtaining research grants, and advising student research including theses and dissertations.

Contribute to efforts fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Department, College, University, and profession at large.

Teach courses at either the graduate or undergraduate level that might include agribusiness, business strategy, food marketing, food policy, managerial economics, or microeconomics. Teach courses in econometrics at the graduate level.

Develop successful grant proposals and work with interdisciplinary research teams, drawing upon expertise in food science and nutrition, public health, applied biological sciences, resource and environmental sciences, business, policy studies, and other areas in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, Extension, and the University to conduct research and deliver knowledge to a wide range of audiences.

Engage business, community, and policy leaders in the Twin Cities, the State of Minnesota, nationally, or internationally to ensure that the research conducted is relevant and placed into a practical context. This outreach is expected to advance research by identifying timely and relevant topics and enabling funding.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

Ph.D. in agricultural economics, applied economics, economics, or related discipline by date of appointment.

Desired

Rigorous training in economics with a specialization in food and/or agricultural economics.

Rigorous training in econometrics or applied econometrics focusing on applied microeconomics.

Evidence of high-quality research and of potential for publication in peer-reviewed field journals and general interest journals in economics and science.

Demonstrated experience in or preparation for effective teaching.

Evidence of strong commitment to the University’s goal of creating a positive and inclusive campus climate by advancing equity and diversity.

Evidence of exemplary communication skills for professional and non-professional audiences.

Experience working with business, community organizations, government agencies, or industry.
