Summary

The Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with rank and salary commensurate with education and experience. We seek an innovative scholar with special interest and expertise in implementation science. The scholar’s background may be based in a wide range of dissemination, implementation, knowledge translation, and/or quality improvement sciences such as (but not restricted to): public health, health services research, psychology, sociology, economics, anthropology, education, social sciences, systems science, organizational behavior, operations research, nursing, social work, or clinical sciences.

We seek candidates in the field of implementation science, knowledge translation, or improvement science (quality improvement) who will focus on understanding, designing, and evaluating multilevel strategies to improve performance and/or improve the uptake of effective innovations in real-world health care settings with an eye towards impacting health care quality, safety, cost, outcomes, equity, and patient and provider experience. Successful candidates will apply dissemination and implementation frameworks combined with insights from multilevel stakeholders at the consumer, frontline provider, clinical manager, health system, community, and policy levels. In addition, successful candidates will conduct novel studies that develop, refine, and test different strategies to improve health care performance and/or improve the uptake and sustainment of effective innovations designed to impact health and health care across different settings (e.g., hospital networks, medical clinics, schools, community-based organizations). Especially desired are candidates with experience in development and/or application of implementation science methods including but not limited to the following areas:

Quantitative and qualitative assessment of patient experience, provider behavior, organization/system change, and/or policy analysis

Adaptation of effective innovations based on multi-stakeholder (e.g., patient, provider, organization, community, and policymaker) input

Design of novel implementation strategies that employ multiple levels of provider behavior and organizational change using different modalities (e.g., learning innovations, participatory systems dynamics, human factors design, economic and policy incentives, community and stakeholder engagement)

Development and application of multisite pragmatic trials using implementation science study designs, especially identifying outcomes, contextual factors, and mechanisms from electronic health record, social media, and other digital health sources

Systems science, economic evaluation, or business case analyses of implementation strategies and processes

Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS).

The DLHS is a first-in-the-nation academic department focused on learning applied to health at all levels of scale: individuals, teams, organizations, and ultra-large-scale systems. DLHS focuses on research in four main areas to support our overarching goal: improve learning to improve health: (1) Education research (e.g., learning by individuals and teams in health settings); (2) Infrastructure research (e.g., complex organizations and large scale systems that span states and nations that apply biomedical informatics, behavior change, organizational change theory, and implementation and quality improvement science, (3) Implementation research (e.g., formation of learning communities around specific health problems employing implementation science methods and best practices to solve or improve that health problem, and (4) Simulation research (e.g., learning by individuals and teams in environments with advanced simulation technology that model the real world of health care practices.

Responsibilities*

Develop and conduct an externally funded research program aligned with the Department’s mission (particularly regarding implementation, knowledge translation, or improvement science) and with the individual’s scholarly interest.

Foster scholarly initiatives with other faculty members for improving implementation science and methods application in learning health systems.

Participate as a faculty member teaching in the Health Infrastructures & Learning Systems (HILS) MS/PhD and HILS online programs.

Co-lead development and administration of the Michigan Implementation Science Network, bringing together faculty with implementation science-focused work to build pathways to successful research funding and career development.

Provide leadership and service that promotes implementation science and its utility and value in enhancing Learning Health Systems in medical and other health care settings.

A start-up package is available to help the successful candidate establish a sustainable research program. Joint appointments with other departments across the University will be available and encouraged.
