One of the top five leaders of the Islamic State (ISIS) has been killed in a US air strike, the Pentagon announced on Tuesday.
Maher al-Agal, responsible for developing ISIS networks outside Iraq and Syria, was killed in a drone strike in northwest Syria, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM). Another ISIS member, a close associate of al-Agal’s, was seriously injured.
“Extensive planning went into this operation to ensure its successful execution. An initial review indicates there were no civilian casualties,” the Pentagon said.
According to the US-led International Coalition against ISIS, the jihadist group has retained between 14,000 and 18,000 members after its battlefield defeat in mid-2019. An estimated 3,000 of them are foreign nationals, however exact numbers are unknown.
“The removal of these ISIS leaders will disrupt the terrorist organisation’s ability to further plot and carry out attacks,” CENTCOM spokesman Joe Buccino said.
Al-Agal’s killing is the latest in a string of drone strikes against the terrorist group in Syria, following the June capture of a senior ISIS leader and bomb-maker, according to the US military.
