The general commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) expressed his sorrow at the death of three women, killed by a Turkish drone strike on Friday, noting that one of the women was serving as joint operations commander with the Global Coalition in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

Mazloum Abdi said:

“Joint Operations Commander with the Global Coalition, Jiyan Afrin, along with our comrades Roj and Barin, all heroines, took part in the war against ISIS to save humanity. Turkey targeting them undermines the war against ISIS. Partners must make greater efforts to stop the violations. We will avenge them.”

US Central Command also released a statement in memory of Jiyan Afrin and her two fellow fighters, expressing condolences to the families of the three women killed by the Turkish drone:

“Salwa Yusuk (AKA Ciyan Afrin) a Deputy Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – along with 2 fellow female fighters – was killed in an attack near Qamishli, Syria, on July 22, 2022. Salwa was a critical SDF leader who led forces in combat vs ISIS since the height of the fight to defeat the vile ideology in NE Syria in 2017. CENTCOM extends our condolences to the Families of these 3 SDF fighters, the people in Northeast Syria & our SDF partners.”

Documentary centred on Jiyan Afrin

A documentary on Kurdish women fighters, released in 2020, tells the story of Jiyan Afrin, beginning with her travel from her home town in northwestern Syria to the Qandil Mountains in Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has its headquarters.

She says in one of the interviews:

“The male dominated sytem did not organise itself only in cities and villages. They organised themselves all the way to the top of the mountains, and there were matters in which they imposed their views on us. What we call gender struggle might sound strange. How can you go to the mountains together for the same purpose, prepared to die for each other, and yet be in a gender struggle? People might find it odd, but for us, it would be odd if it wasn’t that way.”
