The US State Department on Thursday reinstated concerns about the growing tensions in Northeastern Syria as Turkey stepped up drone attacks and artillery strikes in the region killing US backed SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) as well as civilians.
Answering a question about the conflict in the region, the US State Department Spokesperson said that “they remain deeply concerned about the destabilizing impact military activity has had on the region, including our efforts to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS”
A suspected Turkish drone strike recently killed four teenage girls and injured 11 others playing volleyball in a girls’ center in Hasakah on Thursday and killed four teenage girls and injured 11 others.
“We urge all parties to de-escalate, maintain, and respect ceasefire zones, and to work towards a political solution to the conflict,” Ned Price said in the daily press briefing.
Price also said that ISIS (Islamic State) is still active and posed a threat.
The General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi said on Sunday that the Turkish-occupied areas in north Syria have become safe havens for the sleeper cells of the Islamic State (ISIS), and the jihadist group is waiting for the right time to launch attacks.
“We will not be able to fight on two fronts at the same time. We will naturally focus on one. Our focus will be on the northern front to protect the area against Turkish attacks, and our operations against ISIS cells will likely decline,” he said.
