According to data provided by the Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Services, nearly one tenth of all households in Turkey currently rely on state support to pay their electricity bills, Turkish daily Birgun reported.
There are 25.3 million households in Turkey as of 2021, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).
2,345,000 Turkish households were able to pay their electricity bills in the first half of 2022 only with the social assistance money provided by the ministry, Birgun said.
More than 330,000 household were able to pay their natural gas bills the same way.
Over 24 billion Turkish liras (roughly over $1.3 billion as of early September) were allocated to “combating poverty” in the same period of time, marking an increase of 62% compared to the first half of 2021.
According to some findings on extreme poverty, the number of households that are not inhabitable because of poor health conditions and building infrastructure have reached 16,424, while parents living in 10,498 households have been reported to be deprived of the financial means for raising their children.
