Ankara agreed to pay for 25% of the Russian gas supplies to Turkey in Russian Rubles, and the deal will come into effect in the near future, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday, after he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Putin also said that Turkey has become a reliable route for Russian gas deliveries since “Turkstream works well,” Sputnik reported.
Putin and Erdogan met in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where the two leaders attended the 22nd Summit of the Shangai Cooperation Oraganization (SCO). They were expected to focus on the situation in Ukraine, the implementation of the grain deal, and coordination of efforts towards peace and stability in the South Caucasus and Syria, TASS reported.
Putin thanked Erdogan for his contribution to the export of Ukrainian grain and said that he hopes the grain will go to the poorest countries. He added that it is possible to export Russian grain via Turkey.
Putin also noted that the Akkuyu nuclear power plant project in Turkey is being implemented in accordance with the schedule, and that certain issues related to the organization of the project have been resolved. “Yesterday, the final documents regulating all relations between the parties in this large, grandiose construction project were signed,” he said.
