Northeast Syria: Attack on US military post in oil production area

A military post of the US forces in Northeast Syria came under attack on Saturday, without casualties, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

The statement of CENTCOM read:

“A 107mm rocket attack targeting Coalition Forces near the Rumalyn Landing Zone failed. The rocket did not impact inside the compound. No U.S. or partnered forces were killed or injured and neither facilities nor equipment were damaged. Additional rockets were found at the launch origin site.”

The attack came two days after a helicopter raid targeting a senior member of the Islamic State (ISIS) near the city of Qamishli, and a day after the Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a statement in protest over “smuggling of Syrian oil by the US.” It “represents piracy and an attempt to return to the outdated colonial times,” the statement said.

Iran’s Mehr News Agency reiterated the accusation after the recent attack, saying:

“The US military has used dozens of tanker trucks to smuggle crude oil from Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah to bases in neighboring Iraq, where American forces and trainers are stationed, as Washington continues to loot energy resources in the war-ravaged country.”

The town Rmalyn (Rmelan) is one of the major centers of oil production in Syria.
