Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that a report prepared by the interior ministry concerning “terrorist activities” inside Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality was delivered to the civil servants and special investigation office.

Cumhuriyet newspaper columnist Tuncay Mollaveisoglu rang the bell on Wednesday that a terrorist investigation was launched against the municipality and a 578-page report was written within the scope of this investigation.

The prosecution will now examine the report and decide whether to proceed with an investigation.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was sentenced to over 2 years of jail and a political ban by the local court over a speech after Istanbul elections when he said those who annulled the initial vote – in which he narrowly defeated a candidate from Erdogan’s AK Party – were “fools”.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu on Sunday said he can depose Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu if his conviction was approved by the Supreme Court, but he could not appoint a trustee now because the verdict was not “terror-related.”

Last month, Soylu claimed that “1668 employees in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality or their relatives had a record of contact and affiliation with a terrorist organization.”
