Turkish president said on Friday that Turkey may respond with fire in case the Greek islands near Turkish coasts are armed by Athens.
Speaking at a ceremony for a construction project in Istanbul, Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, saying:
“Look Mitsotakis, you are talking about things in public again. Know this well, if you dare make a mistake, the crazy Turks will come marching, keep it in mind.”
The term “crazy Turks” is used as a brag by many in Turkey – particularly ultra nationalists and national socialists – connotatively to mean “unexpectedly daring.”
Erogan continued:
“Are we supposed to just sit and watch if you dare arm the [Greek] islands? They say, ‘Turkey has manufactured a Tayfun missile, what if it hits Athens?’ We do not have plans to hit Athens if you are sensible.”
Mitsotakis said a day earlier, “We should be able to sit down with Turkey as reasonable adults and discuss the issue of the continental shelf and sea zones in the Aegean.”
“Does anyone really believe that the Greek islands are a threat to the Turkish mainland or rather the Turkish mainland threatens the Greek islands?” he added.
