The prisoners in the T Type Prison rioted in earthquake-hit Hatay. They were demanding to be transferred to a safe place and to get information about the condition of their families. The riot was suppressed by the soldiers.

Eyewitnesses were reported to reflect that smoke rose from the prison and gunshots were heard.

The above was first reflected on social media and there were claims that at least two prisoners had been shot dead.

Videos circulating in social media showed injured prisoners lying facing down in the prison yard, with hands fastened at their backs and someone calling out “soldiers, do not come, there is a camera.”

The Criminal Execution System Civil Society Association (CİSST) shared an information note recently about the “riot” in the Hatay prison on February 7 and the events during and after the “riot.”

Accordingly on February 7 at 13:00 ordinary prisoners and convicts in two blocks burnt the dormitories simultaneously and rioted.

An intervention was made by the Yayladağı Prison Gendarme teams upon the request of the prison prosecutor and manager.

When the “riot” and fire expanded, support was requested from the surrounding districts.

Three prisoners killed

Approximately 250 prisoners were taken to the area surrounded by the prison walls. They were pushed back just when they were to escape.

Twelve prisoners injured in this brawl were taken to the Mustafa Kemal University Hospital. Three of the prisoners taken to the hospital died.

CİSST information note does not include the names of the prisoners who had been killed.
