In an interview with Arti Gercek, former HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtas explained his appeal to the opposition to unite saying the alliance should now show the courage to conduct “open and transparent negotiations.”
On Tuesday, Demirtas called on opposition to “Walk side by side, unite and rebuild this destroyed country together.”
“The opposition can halt despair and the collective trauma that Turkey is going through if it grows hope by standing side by side. I wanted to show that the ground for dialogue and cooperation among the opposition is stronger than ever. There should be cooperation between the alliances in terms of helping the people and solidarity, and the alliances should now be able to demonstrate the courage to intervene in the political process by conducting open and transparent negotiations,” he said.
According to Demirtas, the chairperson of the CHP (Republican People’s Party), Kemal Kilicdaroglu, can lead this process and play a unifying role.
In his post, Demirtas had said “Go Mr. Kemal”, which was interpreted as support for Kilicdaroglu’s candidacy against Tayyip Erdogan in the upcoming presidential election.
“My message is not about the candidacy of Mr. Kilicdaroglu, but for his leadership on dialogue, solidarity, negotiation and cooperation,” Demirtas said.
He added:
“While the HDP is so open and principled in favor of open and transparent negotiations, no one should play games anymore. I hope that a healthier basis for talks will be formed and the people waiting for help will be supported with a larger solidarity network and hope will grow for the near future.”
