In his speech at the Naval War College Commencement and Flag Handover Ceremony in Istanbul, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized that Turkey is not compelled to choose between aligning with the European Union or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, countering claims that the nation must pick sides. He emphasized Turkey’s commitment to enhancing relations with both Eastern and Western countries in a mutually beneficial manner.

Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s dedication to safeguarding its entitlements in the “Blue Homeland” and safeguarding the welfare of Turkish Cypriots. He dismissed criticism of Turkey’s regional aspirations, affirming that the country’s goal surpasses its current boundaries, based on historical connections and a wider regional impact.

Erdogan criticized those who consider Turkey’s foreign policy ambitions unachievable or accuse the country of overreach. He justified Turkey’s presence in Libya, Somalia, Qatar, and the Balkans as a continuation of its historical and geopolitical objectives, claiming that criticizing these activities demonstrates a misunderstanding of Turkey’s role and duties in the global arena.
