On February 7, the Istanbul Governor’s Office rejected a request by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) to hold a march titled “From river to the sea, Palestine will be free” on the historic Galata Bridge. The CHP’s Istanbul branch had applied to organize a protest against U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks regarding Gaza’s future, and they had also requested security measures for the event.
During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on February 4, Trump had declared, “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too.” The protest was scheduled for February 9.
According to the governor’s office, the application was dismissed because the proposed route did not fall within the “pre-determined areas for the demonstrations.”
It is also notable that on January 1, 2025, the Turkish Youth Foundation (TÜGVA)—an organization known for its close ties to the government—held its second pro-Palestine march on the same bridge.
