About the opportunity
The School of Social and Political Sciences (SSPS) is seeking to appoint a continuing Lecturer (Level B) in Anthropology, specializing in environmental anthropology, economic anthropology or medical anthropology.
The successful appointee will be located in the Department of Anthropology and teach into our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervise research students, have the opportunity to contribute to School based strategic research themes, and play a role in initiating new research and teaching initiatives within the School, Faculty and University. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the full range of departmental activities and contribute to the life of the School and Faculty. Founded in 1925, the Department of Anthropology at the University of Sydney is Australia’s first. It maintains a strong reputation for theoretical innovation, excellence in ethnographic fieldwork and an outstanding commitment to the training of postgraduate research students.
The School is composed of the departments of Anthropology, Government and International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Political Economy, and Sociology and Social Policy. It offers innovative degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels that attract the very best students from Australia and overseas. SSPS is the focus for the strategic development of the social sciences at Sydney with a view to us becoming Australia’s leading centre for research and teaching in the area.
About you
The School is looking to appoint a Lecturer in Anthropology who possesses:
- a PhD in Anthropology with a focus on environmental anthropology, economic anthropology, or medical anthropology
- a strong record of scholarly publication, including publications in Q1 Anthropology and cognate journals
- evidence of ability to conduct research at an international level
- a track record of external research grants either individually or in teams
- teaching experience at undergraduate level in environmental anthropology, economic anthropology, or medical anthropology
- strong communication, collegial and team-based skills
- teaching experience at postgraduate level in environmental anthropology, economic anthropology, or medical anthropology (desirable)
- demonstrated record of working with organisations beyond the university, and attracting industry and or community funding, to support research (desirable)
- the potential to develop responsible leadership skills (desirable)
The School of Social and Political Sciences is a dynamic unit. In the most recent national research assessment exercise (Excellence in Research for Australia, 2018), Sociology and Political Science at the University of Sydney were awarded the highest possible 5 rating, indicating “well above world standard”. The School also has considerable success in attracting external research funding. In addition, the School is engaged in a series of interdisciplinary Centres and Institutes, including the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies, the Sydney Policy Lab, and the Sydney Environment Institute. The School sits under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences which offers one of the most comprehensive and diverse ranges of humanities and social science studies in the Asia-Pacific region and is regularly ranked in the top 20 faculties of its kind.
