Description

Political Economy with Data Analytic Applications (open rank)

The Murphy Institute for Political Economy and Department of Economics at Tulane University is seeking an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Economics for a joint appointment between the two units to join a diverse environment of scholars dedicated to the discovery, education, and application of research-based knowledge around income disparities, health, environmental, tax, and law. This position is a 9-month tenure-track, academic-year appointment with an allocation of time dedicated to directing a newly envisioned MA program in Political Economy with Data Analytic Applications, teaching in the MA program, teaching for the Economics Department and general service to the Department, College, and University. The expected start date is August 1, 2022.

Responsibilities:
The Murphy Institute for Political Economy plans to begin a MA program in Political Economy with Data Analytic Applications. We expect the program to admit 5-10 students annually and will need an inaugural director to handle admissions, curriculum, other duties as needed to successfully administer the program and successful matriculation of students.

The teaching part of this role will comprise a course of MA-level introductory Political Economy and a Capstone course in Political Economy—both with data applications. In the broader MA program, students from diverse backgrounds ranging from economics, data science, criminal justice, business, statistical science, and computing to public health and medicine will take a wide variety of programming and data courses from across the campus which will give them an understanding of programming in R, Stata, SAS, Python, Julia, GIS, and other programs and related analytic skills. Thus, teaching students how to analyze data to address pressing issues surrounding political economy is needed.

The position is joint with the Tulane Department of Economics, which specializes in applied microeconomic analysis of public policy issues, currently including crime, discrimination, education, environment, health, poverty, taxation, and social welfare programs. The selected candidate will teach one course for the Economics Department which fits with the candidate and department skill set/needs. The course load is four courses annually, minus a course reduction for serving as director of the M.A. program.

Tulane University is a private research university located in New Orleans. It is in a period of great ambition and significant transformation. Under the leadership of President Mike Fitts and Provost Robin Forman, the past three years have seen the hiring of several new deans and directors, including Liberal Arts Dean Brian Edwards and Murphy Institute Executive Director Gary Hoover, both of whom have a profound commitment to research and a concerted set of initiatives focused anti-racism and equity.

The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and categorized by the Carnegie Foundation as “very high research activity,” one of only 25 private universities to receive both such designations.

The Murphy Institute hold tenure and joint appointments in departments such as Philosophy, Political Science and Economics. The Economics Department anticipates making several hires in the next few years and are looking for dynamic forward-thinking individuals to help grow this partnership with initiatives such as the MA degree in Political Economy with Data Analytics Applications. We anticipate joint hires with multiple units and schools on campus.
