Russia understands Turkey’s sensitivities to threats posed by foreign powers on its borders, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters on Wednesday.

Russia understands Turkey’s sensitivities because foreign actors are engaged in similar activities inside Russia as well, Lavrov said, speaking at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. Lavrov called US support for certain Syrian groups “illegal”, and said Russia’s cooperation with Turkey on the Syria issue would continue.

On 25 May, Lavrov said in a TV interview that the US was creating quasi-states in Syria and encouraging separatism by exploiting Kurdish sentiments, and that Turkey’s involvement in such a situation was “understandable”.

On the other hand, Moscow hopes that Ankara will avoid actions that could dangerously worsen the already difficult situation in Syria, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on 3 June.
