Imprisoned Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas called on Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan “to quit politics while there is still time.”
He said on Twitter on Friday:
“You don’t have the university degree. You don’t have the right to run for another term. You are responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, you don’t have any shame. You’ve left the country in misery, you don’t have anywhere to hide. You must not run in the elections while you ‘don’t have’ so many things.”
He added:
“Why don’t you announce that you are quitting politics while you still have time. Do it and let the country breathe. Well, if you must insist, saying ‘It’s my right to go through a historical elections disaster,’ then rest assured that we will grant you that right.”
Demirtas, former co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), has been incarcerated since November 2016, and has been denied release despite a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), who said his detention “pursued the ulterior purpose of stifling pluralism and limiting freedom of political debate.”
