Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader and the opposition’s presidential candidate in Turkey, has strongly denied accusations made by President Tayyip Erdogan that he has been engaging in secret negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and meeting with loan sharks in London.
In an interview with journalist Murat Yetkin’s website YetkinReport, Kilicdaroglu stated that his party has no intention of resorting to the IMF or loan sharks during their administration, and that the accusations made by President Erdogan are baseless.
He also added that Turkey needs to move away from being dependent on foreign loans and work towards a more sustainable economic model.
On Monday, Erdogan claimed that if Kilicdaroglu wins the election, he would make Turkey dependent on the IMF once again. He repeated these allegations the following day where he also accused Kilicdaroglu of taking money from London and being a Trojan horse for imperialists.
In response, Kilicdaroglu criticized President Erdogan for turning Turkey into a country that depends on foreign loans and for allowing criminals to operate freely in the country. He also stated that his party’s goal is to attract investment and clean money into the country, not rely on foreign loans and black market operations.
Kilicdaroglu further added that the accusations made by President Erdogan were not based on facts, and that he and his party are open about their activities and meetings with foreign officials. He also criticized the current government for allowing drug lords and smugglers to operate freely in Turkey and turning the country into a hub for money laundering.
