Turkey records hottest june in more than half a century

In June 2024, Turkey experienced its hottest temperatures in 53 years, according to the Turkish State Meteorological Service. The lowest temperature was 1.6 °C in eastern Erzurum province, while the highest was 47.8 °C in southeastern Şanlıurfa province.

The average temperature for June was 25.4 °C, which is 3.6 °C higher than the normal average of 21.8 °C. This is 2.0 °C higher than the average compared to June 2019. Rainfall in Turkey during June 2024 dropped 65 percent below the average.

The total rainfall was 11.9 mm, compared to the average of 33.6 mm. This marked the lowest June rainfall in Turkey in the past 23 years. All regions in Turkey received below-average rainfall, with the Marmara Region showing the greatest decrease at 92 percent.

The Aegean and Mediterranean regions experienced their lowest rainfall in the past 23 years, while the Marmara and Black Sea regions had their lowest in the past 21 years, and the Central Anatolia region had its lowest in the past 12 years.

The highest precipitation was recorded in Rize (Black Sea) with 97.0 mm and the lowest precipitation was recorded in İzmir (Aegean) with 0.4 mm.
