Syrian Rebels Launch Major Offensive Against Assad Forces in Aleppo

In the most significant escalation of Syria’s civil war in years, Islamist rebels launched a large-scale offensive on November 27, targeting government-controlled areas in northwestern Syria, including the strategic outskirts of Aleppo. The assault, spearheaded by the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has resulted in the capture of at least 15 villages and 100 square kilometers of territory, marking the largest gains by opposition forces since 2020.

Government forces were unprepared for the offensive, which raised concerns about a wider escalation in the ten-year conflict and threatened to undermine tenuous ceasefire deals mediated by Russia and Turkey.

Fierce Battles and Government Counterstrikes

A counteroffensive has been initiated by the Syrian army, which has reieved support from Russian airpower. This offensive includes the use of artillery barrages and airstrikes to reclaim lost territory. The conflicts have led to substantial losses for both parties, as indicated by military sources. Syrian state media characterized the assault as “a massive terrorist attack,” asserting that government forces are “valiantly repelling” the rebels.

Nonetheless, civilian regions have suffered the most from the conflict. Local accounts claim that a minimum of 18 civilians, including children, were fatalities in airstrikes targeting villages in western Aleppo. Numerous families have evacuated the impacted areas, seeking asylum in congested displacement camps adjacent to the Turkish border.

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

The increase in violence has worsened an already critical humanitarian crisis in Syria. Humanitarian organizations have had to halt their activities in the impacted regions, resulting in at-risk communities being deprived of essential resources such as food, water, and medical supplies. The United Nations has voiced serious concern regarding the displacement of thousands, cautioning that a humanitarian catastrophe may be imminent if the conflict persists.

Mark Cutts, the UN’s Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. “The escalation is putting countless civilian lives at risk and jeopardizing the fragile aid supply to millions of people in need,” he said.

Regional and Geopolitical Implications

The enduring volatility in Syria, where the balance of power remains precarious, is underscored by this offensive. HTS, a dominant faction in opposition-held Idlib, has stepped up its efforts to challenge Assad’s regime, thereby attempting to test the limits of the 2020 armistice that was negotiated by Moscow and Ankara.

Analysts propose that the timing of the assault may be affected by overarching regional factors, encompassing evolving alliances and escalating tensions among Turkey, Russia, and Iran. Turkey, which supports certain rebel factions, may encounter pressure to adjust its strategy, especially as the violence jeopardizes the stability of border regions

Russia, a prominent supporter of Assad, has escalated its aerial operations in reaction to the insurgent progress, indicating its dedication to maintaining the regime’s territorial integrity. Militias supported by Iran have allegedly allied with government forces, heightening concerns of an extended and more violent battle.

A Country at the Edge

The offensive highlights Syria’s role as a central hub for both regional and international conflicts. With the conflict now in its 14th year, the chances for a political resolution seem to diminish further. The advances of the rebels not only pose a challenge to Assad’s hold on power but also underscore the fragmented nature of the opposition forces, which include Islamist militants and Turkish-backed factions.

The renewed fighting introduces yet another chapter of suffering for civilians caught in the conflict. The global community is under increasing pressure to engage diplomatically in order to avert further violence and tackle the escalating humanitarian crisis.

In spite of the ongoing intensity of the clashes, experts warn that Syria’s civil war is still far from concluded, with no definitive victor apparent.
