Description:
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is changing. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic – and, to a lesser degree, before — people have been pouring into the area surrounding Jackson Hole, the heart of one of the last mostly intact ecosystems in the lower 48. That presents challenges. Recreation is impacting wildlife. Development is impacting water quality. And climate change is beginning to reshape core ecosystem functions.
The Jackson Hole News&Guide has an immediate opening for an experienced reporter to cover the Greater Yellowstone’s changing environment, as well as contribute general assignments, features and breaking news to a weekly and daily paper. Hot topics on this beat include wildlife and public land management, celebrity bears, ski resort development and any other issue covering humans’ impact on the natural world.
Ideal candidates will have excellent language and writing skills, at least two years of newsroom experience, a B.A. in journalism or the equivalent, and curiosity about everything from spider ecology to the inner workings of the federal government . The environmental reporter will work directly with the managing editor, who will also write 2-4 environmental stories per month, comprising a two-person environmental team.
On-the-job mentoring is available in this creative, fast-paced, deadline-oriented work environment. Spanish is a plus. The newsroom produces work for the award-winning Jackson Hole News&Guide weekly and Jackson Hole Daily in print, as well as JHNewsAndGuide.com.
Compensation includes health insurance, profit sharing, paid vacation time and other benefits. Pay based on experience.
About the Jackson Hole News&Guide: Our vision is to be catalysts for an engaged and inspired community, providing timely, relevant news and insight, and creating opportunities to connect members of the community. The paper of record for this internationally known tourism destination, the News&Guide reports exclusively on the civic, social and creative life of Teton County, Wyoming. Environmental issues here can be complex and contentious, often pitting individual rights to build and recreate against the health and welfare of the wildlife and wildlands of this environmental wonderland. Coverage of these issues demands the ability to translate the technical discussion of government and policy into on-the-street examples of how actions may affect residents, wild and human. The News&Guide has a reputation for producing excellent community journalism, and of mentoring excellent young journalists committed to the profession.
About Jackson Hole, Wyoming: Home to Grand Teton National Park and the southern gateway to Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole is legendary for its high mountain environment, wildlife, snowy winters and lively cultural scene. Surrounded by the southern reaches of the 22 million-acre Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, it is an important hub in one of the last truly wild expanses in the United States. As such, many eyes are on the region, paying close attention to the tensions between the efforts to preserve and protect the natural splendor of the area and the pressures of a rising population and still-expanding tourism trade.
