Description:
JTA is the definitive global news source covering Jewish stories and issues worldwide. For more than a century, we’ve been providing accurate, engaging reporting on news and issues affecting the Jewish people and their communities in the United States, Israel and around the globe.
We’re seeking a senior reporter who will break major stories, spot emerging trends, and produce insightful stories of interest to American Jewish audiences. We’re searching for someone who is hungry to report and write stories that drive the American Jewish conversation and that have an impact on the feelings, ideas and actions of American Jews and their institutions.
The ideal candidate has: a keen sense of the stories that matter to American Jews and those who care about them; the ability to discover — and own — ongoing stories and beats; and a passion for developing sources and chasing stories that others may overlook.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
-
Report and write enterprise stories on topics that you pitch and are assigned
-
Own and manage beats in which you are the primary staff member responsible for source-building, identifying changes and trends, and producing stories that have impact
-
Work closely with your editors and colleagues to define your beat, refine your pitches and ideas, and improve your work
-
Seek and pursue opportunities to grow your skills, teach them to our broader team and represent JTA in appropriate public forums.
-
Collaborate with the team of journalists at JTA and 70 Faces Media to ensure that our coverage is well rounded, engaging and impactful.
Required Qualifications:
-
Sharp news judgment: ability to identify what’s newsworthy and an added value for our audience
-
Excellence in writing engaging, clear, clean copy on deadline
-
Knowledge of, and interest in, Jewish communities, issues and institutions
-
Proven ability to develop and manage sources
-
Record of strong collaboration with past editors
Ideal Candidate:
-
5+ years of journalism experience
-
Has experience managing multiple reporting projects at the same time
-
Understands what makes a story relevant to Jewish audiences
-
Relishes building sources and breaking big stories
-
Demonstrates sophisticated understanding of American Jewish diversity
-
Shows ability to see stories others miss while covering well-trodden ground
-
Lives in New York City or another major center of Jewish life
