A recent call by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan for the dissolution of the organization and its disarmament has sparked a wave of reactions from various factions within the broader Kurdish movement. While some groups have expressed support, others have distanced themselves from the declaration, most notably the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDG).
SDG Leader: “The Call Does Not Include Us”
Following Öcalan’s message, the leader of the SDG, Mazlum Abdi, dismissed its relevance to his group, stating, “This does not apply to us.” His remarks stood in contrast to statements from other PKK-affiliated factions.
The Iranian branch of the PKK, PJAK, announced its support for Öcalan’s call. Additionally, the former co-chair of the YPG/PYD, Salih Muslim, stated, “We agree with Öcalan’s statements. If we are allowed to function as a political entity, we will disarm.”
However, the SDG, which primarily consists of YPG forces, rejected the idea of inclusion in the disarmament initiative.
İmralı Delegation Member Counters SDG’s Stance
Responding to Mazlum Abdi’s remarks, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, a member of the İmralı delegation and a DEM Party MP for Istanbul, argued that Öcalan’s call applies universally.
“Principally, it applies to everyone. This declaration of intent has been made. Now, let’s discuss and determine how to implement it in different areas. Of course, it primarily applies to the PKK—it is the main body and the structure it established. However, the YPG structure was also created with inspiration from Öcalan. Weapons are to be deactivated. This applies to everyone.” Önder stated.
Political Reactions and the Next Steps
With Öcalan’s call gaining traction, discussions have emerged over the future of the PKK and its affiliated groups. Önder noted that the initial phase of the process had been successfully completed.
“The most critical and strategic part of this process has been accomplished—everyone has declared their stance,” he said.
Addressing concerns over potential negotiations, Önder emphasized that there are no preconditions in the process.
“I swear on my honor that there is no bargaining or precondition in this matter. Moving forward, technical, legal, and political measures will be needed. But let me be clear: we will not divide this country, nor will we allow it to be divided,” he affirmed.
