Description:

Perform functions to instruct students on established curriculum with the focus on assessing the educational, learning styles, and program needs of students referred for a special education evaluation. Provide classroom diagnostic information and work collaboratively with members of the diagnostic and leadership teams to determine the most appropriate program if needed for students referred for a special education evaluation. This is a full-time position.

Program Summary:

The purpose of the Transitional Classroom is to provide a small group instructional learning environment for early childhood students referred for special education evaluations. Ares of identified needs may include academic; communication; motor, and social/emotional. Through purposeful instruction, students’ strengths and weaknesses are identified using data collected in the classroom to identify an appropriate educational program within the least restrictive environment. This classroom provides academic instruction based on the Illinois Early Learning and Development standards with an emphasis on school readiness skills. After a 4-week classroom cycle, eligibility will be determined for special education services for referred students. Outcomes may include special education within a general education setting, special education outside a general education setting, or does not qualify for special education.

Job Summary:

1. Plan and instruct students on District and state approved curriculum in the classroom as appropriate based on student needs.

2. Modify and adapt lessons and curriculum as needed to meet individual student’s needs.

3. Modify, adapt and/or conduct assessments to evaluate individual student’s needs. Implement assessments and modify and/or adapt the environment or equipment to meet individual student’s needs.

4. Review student progress via assessments, maintain records of student work, and develop intervention strategies to ensure student success.

5. Meet regularly with diagnostic team members to discuss individual student’s modifications or adaptations, ongoing learning issues, interventions or problems.

6. Actively participate and collaborate with diagnostic personnel during case study review to facilitate understanding of students’ individual strengths and challenges.

7. Facilitate and participate in initial eligibility/IEP meetings and develop appropriate accommodations and IEP goals for students who are found eligible for special education.

8. Support IEP development for students who are eligible for special education services.

9. Establish a safe atmosphere conducive to a positive learning environment. Act as role model on appropriate behaviors ensuring social and emotional development is progressing normally.

10. Assign work, instructions or lessons to teacher assistants. Assess work, modify and provide regular feedback.

11. Actively participate on various building and District teams or committees.

12. Enforce and support school policies, philosophies and objectives with students and parents.

13. Collaborate with other staff in planning, modifying, enhancing and implementing curriculum and school objectives.

14. Participate in staff development and school improvement activities in order to maintain professional growth. Plan and incorporate best practices or new strategies.

15. Participate in events outside of the regularly scheduled work day such as orientation, open houses or conferences.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Illinois Professional Educator License with appropriate Early Childhood and Special Education endorsements.
