General Assignment Reporter

The Federal Way Mirror in Federal Way, WA, is seeking an energetic, curious and community-minded reporter to cover local news, government, schools, business, public safety and community events in South King County.

This is an ideal opportunity for an early-career journalist who enjoys meeting people, digging into issues that matter, and telling compelling stories across print, digital and social platforms.

What You’ll Do

  • Report and write accurate, engaging news and feature stories on deadline.

  • Attend and cover city meetings, community events, press conferences and breaking news.

  • Develop story ideas and cultivate sources throughout the community.

  • Conduct interviews and research to ensure fairness, accuracy and context.

  • Take photos and capture video to accompany stories.

  • Post stories, photos and updates to digital and social media platforms.

  • Collaborate with editors and fellow journalists on coverage priorities and special projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • 1-2 years of reporting experience preferred; strong internship experience will be considered.

  • Excellent writing, reporting and interviewing skills.

  • Familiarity with Associated Press style.

  • Strong news judgment and attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Comfortable using digital publishing tools, social media and multimedia storytelling techniques.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and current vehicle insurance.

  • Ability to attend meetings and events as needed.

Schedule

This is a full-time position, typically 40 hours per week. Because news doesn’t always happen during business hours, occasional evening and weekend work is required. Pay range is $19-$20/hour based on experience.
