The Art Department at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz seeks applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Art Education. This is a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 2025. The Art Education program at SUNY New Paltz is a robust, progressive teacher preparation program housed within a thriving Art Department. Our art education and studio art programs promote creative education for all with the understanding of art’s capacity to foster students who are problem solvers and agents of change for community transformation. We are seeking a dedicated artist-educator with extensive experience teaching children and youth in school and/or community settings. As we launch our new Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program in Fall 2025, we encourage applications from candidates with experience teaching and/or leading art education programs at the graduate level. A vibrant studio or creative practice is also highly valued. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about collaborating with faculty, museum educators, local schools, community partners, and statewide arts organizations to develop innovative initiatives that enhance our art education program at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Responsibilities for tenure-track faculty at SUNY New Paltz include but are not limited to:

  • A 3/3 teaching load, which may involve the design and supervision of field placements and internships in schools and community organizations.
  • Demonstrable empathy and generosity with both students and colleagues.
  • Collaboration on interdisciplinary initiatives and partnership opportunities for student engagement on campus and in the community.
  • Continuous engagement in creative/scholarly research and professional activity.
  • Service to the department, college, and university including participation on departmental and college-wide committees and student advising/mentorship. Service may also include promoting the art education programs statewide and beyond.

QualificationsRequired:

  • A doctorate (PhD or EdD) is required at time of hire; however, exceptional ABD candidates with an established completion date will be considered.
  • The equivalent of at least three years of full-time teaching experience with children and youth.
  • Must be well-versed in a wide range of contemporary approaches and critical issues in both art and art education and have a track record of successful collaborations.

Preferred:

  • Strong preference for candidates with expertise in teaching or leading graduate studies
  • Candidates who have a strong creative/studio practice
  • Ability to integrate traditional and new media in PK-12 art classrooms
