The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (The HAVI) invites nominations and applications for its inaugural development staff person, an Associate Director of Advancement (Associate Director). Located within the Health Resources in Action organization, The HAVI builds and connects violence intervention programs and promotes equity for victims of violence globally.

This role is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious fundraising professional to bring project management skills, relationship management experience, and appetite for growth to a dynamic organization at the forefront of the movement to heal systemic and interpersonal violence. The person in this position will have the ability to work collaboratively with talented senior staff and program directors to expand the breadth and impact of the organization by growing and systematizing its advancement work.

The Associate Director of Advancement will be a central coordinator, working to ensure that The HAVI’s development pipeline is organized and the organization’s forward momentum on securing resources to support its work remains strong. The person in this role will, over time and with support, be responsible for securing significant funds to expand the scope and breadth of the organization’s impact and to support the organization’s signature programs. They will be expected to develop relationships with The HAVI’s Advancement Council and key funders and to build internal processes for pipeline management, stewardship, and grant reporting. The Associate Director will have the opportunity to help steward the growth of The HAVI’s advancement function as the team and operation scales up to support organizational needs.

ABOUT HEALTH RESOURCES IN ACTION & THE HEALTH ALLIANCE FOR VIOLENCE INTERVENTION

To heal communities affected by violence, The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (The HAVI) fosters hospital and community collaborations to advance equitable, trauma-informed care for violence intervention/prevention programs. Their vision is to build a system of healthcare that mobilizes hospitals and communities to end violence together. The HAVI is made up of five divisions: Capacity Building, Organizational Growth and Equity, Policy and Communications, Communities of Practice, and the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education.

The HAVI supports hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs), which vary in their design and scope. Essential components of HVIPs include a brief intervention to violently injured patients in the emergency department or at the hospital bedside and intensive community-based case management services following discharge. HVIP services are provided by culturally competent Violence Prevention Professionals. HVIPs are rooted in the philosophy that violence is preventable, and that connecting with those who are directly impacted offers unique opportunity to break cycles of violence. HVIPs embrace a public health approach to violence prevention as they are grounded in data, which indicate that victims of violence are at elevated risk for re-injury and violence perpetration. This model has been the subject of numerous peer-reviewed studies indicating promising impact on injury recidivism, criminal justice contact, and trauma symptoms, and is recommended by the federal government.

HVIPs are one of a handful of evidence-informed practices that support cities to reduce violence and scale trauma-informed care. The field has largely been fractured, and recent federal, state, and local advocacy efforts have helped encourage collaboration and coordination across various approaches. This shift – from individual programs to integrated strategies – has led to the emergent concept of a community violence intervention ecosystem (CVI ecosystem). The HAVI is proud to be a core member of the CVI ecosystem and in collaboration with other organizations leading the field of violence prevention/intervention via the Coalition to Advance Public Safety.

The HAVI is a fiscally sponsored project of Health Resources in Action, Inc. (HRiA). THE ROLE

This position is an excellent opportunity for an experienced fundraising professional to bring vision, expertise, and innovative thinking to a growing and dynamic organization. The position affords the chance to work collaboratively with talented senior staff and program directors to expand the breadth and impact of the organization by growing and further systematizing its development function.

The Associate Director of Advancement role is envisioned as serving a central coordinating function, working to ensure that The HAVI’s advancement work is well organized, ensuring that momentum is maintained between and among the other key principles working to raise funds for programs and operations.

The Associate Director will be responsible for securing funds to expand the scope and breadth of the organization’s impact and to support the organization’s signature programs. They will be expected to step into funder meetings, and to build internal processes for pipeline management & stewardship policies. The Associate Director will bring expertise in identifying and securing federal and state contracts and national philanthropic grants.

The Associate Director will be responsible for managing relationships with the Advancement Council, a group of nine leaders who have been meeting quarterly for the past two years to support The HAVI’s fundraising needs, including assisting with the development and implementation of fundraising strategies and helping to secure sponsorships for The HAVI’s annual conference. Advancement Council members serve as ambassadors for the organization and facilitate introductions to prominent community leaders, foundations, and corporate supporters. The Associate Director will help strengthen relationships between The HAVI and the Advancement Council and partner with members in seeking opportunities to support The HAVI’s work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with senior leadership to identify prospects, cultivate donor and funder relationships, and manage reporting requirements for large-scale (six to eight figure) federal, state, and foundation grants to support The HAVI’s work and enable impact.
  • Develop an internal system to manage The HAVI’s contributed and earned revenue pipelines and stewardship needs over time.
  • Build strong relationships with The HAVI’s Advancement Council and partner with members to increase philanthropic support for The HAVI’s work.
  • In collaboration with business development staff, build internal systems to track, compete for, and report on government contracts and other fee-for-service consulting work.
  • Create and implement a regular, consistent process to identify, vet, and distribute funding opportunities internally across the organization.
  • Identify and implement systems and metrics to track funding opportunities, streamline proposal development, and measure development success rates.
  • Act as a technical advisor to The HAVI staff and build their capacity to effectively secure contracts and grants.
  • Identify and manage external consultants to assist with grant writing and other development functions as required.
  • Engage in organizational marketing, communication, and planning to support advancement.

 

Qualifications

This role requires an entrepreneurial, relationally skilled professional who will build on experience soliciting and stewarding major philanthropic support and developing strong systems to support the development lifecycle. The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Seven or more years of experience working in development at a nonprofit or public health organization, including experience applying for and reporting on large (six to eight figure) federal government contracts and public and foundation grants.
  • Strong interest in violence intervention and health equity issues and experience developing funding proposals for related work.
  • Proven knowledge of various institutional funding streams, awareness of new trends or opportunities in the field, and a track record of securing multi-year contracts/grants.
  • Strategic thinker able to create a vision for The HAVI’s advancement functions and set goals to support growth in funding for The HAVI’s mission and programs.
  • Facility with budget development and management and knowledge of funding regulations and restrictions, including those relevant to federal funding.
  • Exposure to relationship management in an institutional philanthropic context, and desire to grow into managing major funder relationships.
  • Energized by working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with multiple priorities and ample room for self-directed growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage up, delegate effectively and diplomatically, and manage large proposal writing processes within a team.
  • Strong computer and project management skills, including experience working with development database systems and workflow tracking.
  • A commitment to value and seek diversity of thought, backgrounds, and perspectives.
  • Collegial and outgoing nature with strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen as well as lead and to quickly form strong relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining vigilant attention to deadlines and details.
  • Well-honed oral and written communication skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness, creativity in problem solving, and overall good judgment.

The Associate Director of Advancement is an exempt, full-time, fully remote position with some domestic travel, and will report to The HAVI’s Executive Director. The salary range for this role is between $95,000 – $105,000 based on skills and experience.
