Description:

News reporter

The Bangor Daily News, an innovative, award-winning and family-owned digital media company, has an immediate opening for an ambitious and enterprising news reporter to cover Greater Bangor.

You would join a talented team of journalists dedicated to producing direct, honest, comprehensive and compelling news coverage in our home market. This is a general assignment beat with a focus on several growing communities surrounding Bangor, including Old Town and Orono, home of the University of Maine’s flagship campus. There would also be opportunities to develop broader beats based on your experience and the audience’s interest, as well as training and development to advance in your role.

On a typical day in this role, you could expect to cover breaking news in Greater Bangor, ranging from car crashes to fires. You would build relationships with officials in your coverage area, attend public meetings, and report on key votes as soon as they happen. You would also develop sources to produce enterprise work. Previous reporting on this beat has exposed allegations of discrimination by town officials, the wrongful termination of a university professor and a school department’s lawsuit against a local activist.

If you’re an ideal candidate, you’re passionate about watchdog journalism and love to tackle complicated and controversial subjects. You move quickly and want to develop sources who can tell you things before anyone else. It’s a bonus if you know how to find and analyze data and uncover stories from financial documents. You’re eager to learn and acquire new skills.

You’d be joining a large, and growing, statewide news organization in its fourth generation of local ownership. We believe that there’s a bright future for newsrooms that invest in good journalism and put their audiences first. This role is a key part of that strategy.

If you think you might be our next great hire, please submit your resume, cover letter and links to at least three clips to [email protected].
