Data Reporter 2

The Bay Area News Group — which operates the Mercury News and East Bay Times in the San Francisco Bay Area – is looking for an energetic and accomplished journalist who combines exceptional critical thinking skills with a strong foundation in finding data, understanding it, manipulating it, and presenting it in creative ways for a sophisticated Bay Area and Silicon Valley audience. The data reporter will help lead our data efforts in a very collaborative newsroom, working with reporters, editors and visual journalists on daily, enterprise and project-level work to reveal the untold stories and explain the trends behind everything from the next stage of the pandemic to the most insane housing market on earth. Show us you are as comfortable battling bureaucrats for public records as you are scraping websites and using APIs. Convince us you are both a font of ideas and a phenom at making things happen — someone who is always looking for answers, not excuses on why things can’t be done. Sounds like you? We’re excited to hear your ideas.

What you will do:

  • Research, obtain, curate and analyze data from various sources to support your stories

  • Visualize the data to make it more accessible and digestible for readers; make clear to readers why they should care and/or how the news affects them

  • Collaborate with reporters and visual artists on Journalism projects

  • Juggle multiple stories of varying complexity, from quick news posts and daily news stories to longer-term enterprise and features

  • Publish 3 to 5 stories a week

  • Make breaking news a top priority and show a willingness to embrace last-minute changes in coverage plans and still meet critical deadlines for daily and weekend work and standards for high-impact journalism

What you will bring:

  • Applicants should have experience with relational databases and SQL; with organizing, sorting and analyzing data; and with building digital graphics using the latest data visualization tools

  • Adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards at all times and abide by the newspaper’s written ethics policy; newsroom employees are on the front lines of protecting this newspaper’s credibility

  • Be willing to spend time learning about the market and its residents and apply that knowledge to daily reporting

  • Excellent news judgment

  • Strong writing under deadline pressure, for online and print audiences

  • 4-year college degree (journalism or related fields) required

  • Two years prior experience required

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required; must have access to a vehicle as field assignments can be in places where mass transit is not available

Must be located in the South or East Bay Area with weekly onsite expectations in San Jose or Concord.

Along with your resume please include: four examples of your best data-driven journalism, and a cover letter that shows us how your imagination works by describing how you would use a pair of datasets of your choosing to reveal to the world a story that’s never been told before

The hourly wage is $30.77 – $34.87 ($60,155 – $68,170). Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
