Description:

Digital Democracy is an open-source civic information
platform that helps journalists and the public understand state legislatures
through data, video, AI-powered analysis, and original reporting tools.

The Connecticut Mirror, Connecticut’s free, digital,
nonprofit, nonpartisan trusted source for news about Connecticut public policy,
politics and government, and the winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Local
Reporting, is looking for a Project Manager to serve as the primary owner of
our Digital Democracy implementation.

This role will ensure the platform works effectively for the
CT Mirror newsroom, coordinate with the Digital Democracy team in California on
implementation and improvements, maintain the accuracy and quality of the
platform’s Connecticut-specific information, and help CT Mirror journalism
staff and external partners make effective use of the platform.

This is a highly collaborative role that combines
cross-functional project coordination, content and data management, and
management, and marketing and outreach. The ideal candidate understands
newsroom workflows, website functionality, the legislative process, and how to
communicate effectively with tech and non-tech colleagues.

Responsibilities

Project Coordination

  • Serve
    as the internal subject-matter expert for Digital Democracy, helping
    reporters, editors, and new staff understand how to use the platform and
    incorporate its data into their work”

  • Serve
    as the primary point of contact for CT Mirror’s Digital Democracy
    implementation.

  • Ensure
    the platform is functioning in a way that supports the newsroom’s
    editorial priorities and audience needs.

  • Document
    requirements, decisions, and workflows and manage the product plan to
    support initial integration of the platform onto the CT Mirror site and
    ongoing platform improvements.

  •  Work
    with editors and reporters to manage troubleshooting and new feature
    requests.

  • Assist
    with user acceptance testing and quality assurance before new features are
    released.

  • Gather
    feedback from reporters, editors, and other stakeholders, translate it
    into product requirements, and prioritize enhancements.

  • Work
    with editorial, design, and engineering teams to determine the best user
    experience for embedded legislative data, videos, bill information,
    legislator profiles, and other interactive components.

  • Track
    milestones and deliverables.

Content Creation:

  • Solicit,
    edit, and periodically update legislator bios and leadership positions.

  • Maintain
    and update curated pages.

  • Collaborate
    with reporters and editors to improve explanatory content and contextual
    information throughout the platform.

  • Maintain
    evergreen legislative information based on CT Mirror editorial standards
    and workflows.

  • Field
    Digital Democracy questions related to cleaning up AI transcriptions of
    legislative proceedings.

  • Clean
    up transcriptions / data as they’re scraped (including speaker
    identification).

Data Quality and Management:

  • Coordinate
    updates during legislative transitions, elections, committee
    reorganizations, and special sessions.

  • Monitor
    and update the database regularly to ensure legislative information within
    the platform remains accurate and current.

  • Manage
    the process of classifying company industries or sectors as they enter the
    database and consolidating the myriad ways of referring to the same
    organization into one keyword per organization.

  • Review
    platform content regularly to ensure information is complete, accurate,
    and reflects changes in the legislature.

Marketing and Outreach:

  • You
    will be the external face of Digital Democracy, evangelizing the benefits
    and impact of the platform to external newsrooms, advocacy groups, civic
    organizations, and the public at large through one-to-one outreach,
    convenings and events, social media campaigns, and other forms of
    promotion.

  • Onboard
    and train new groups on how to best utilize Digital Democracy.

  • Serve
    as a resource to outside groups as questions emerge about how to best use
    the platform, including troubleshooting tech or data issues for external
    users.

  • Monitor
    the impact of Digital Democracy for use in future fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+
    years of experience in project management, newsroom operations, digital
    publishing, or a related field.

  • Strong
    organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects
    simultaneously.

  • Excellent
    written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience
    working across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Strong
    attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

  • Familiarity
    with WordPress or other content management systems.

  • Comfort
    learning new software platforms and content management systems.

  • Ability
    to translate editorial needs into clear product requirements.

Preferred

  • Experience
    working in a newsroom, nonprofit news organization, or civic technology
    organization.

  • Experience
    working with software development teams using Agile or similar project
    management methodologies.

  • Knowledge
    of state government, legislatures, or public policy.

  • Experience
    with website launches, product implementations, or digital publishing
    projects.

  • Live
    in Connecticut

What Success Looks Like After Six Months:

  • Be the
    trusted owner of CT Mirror’s Digital Democracy implementation.

  • Ensure
    the platform consistently reflects the newsroom’s editorial priorities.

  • Coordinate
    successful feature rollouts between CT Mirror and the Digital Democracy
    platform team.

  • Maintain
    accurate, comprehensive legislative reference information that journalists
    can rely on.

  • Help
    shape how Digital Democracy integrates into your CT Mirror’s broader
    digital products.

  • Build
    strong working relationships with reporters, editors, engineers, and
    product teams.

  • Identify
    and onboard other newsrooms, advocacy groups, and civic organizations into
    Digital Democracy on CT Mirror.

  • Manage
    a marketing campaign to engage with the public at large with Digital
    Democracy.

the public better understand how Connecticut’s government works.

This full-time position pays $75,000 annually and is based
in CT Mirror’s Hartford, Connecticut newsroom. Some remote work will be
considered.
