Emerging News Reporter - Public Safety 2

We are looking for an aggressive, curious journalist to be a Emerging News Reporter focused on Public Safety for The News & Observer (Raleigh) and The Herald-Sun (Durham).

This reporter will be based in the Triangle and will be part of a growing Triangle communities team delivering original, subscriber-focused reporting. The reporter will pay attention to News of the Day efforts with an emphasis on:

Breaking News, which includes covering high-impact breaking news, high-interest public-safety issues and quick-turn accountability enterprise with an emphasis on those affected by public safety and court news.

Trending News, which requires an astute awareness of or willingness to learn audience-based metrics, timeliness, and fuses with The News & Observer’s attention to essential, differentiated stories that reflect our growing communities.

Service Journalism, which epitomizes a heartfelt sense of community and service to helping subscribers to understand how news and events affect them personally.

The successful candidate will be competitive and collaborative. The expectation is to move fast on breaking news by delivering an initial report within minutes and then follow it by producing exclusives that make a difference in the lives of our readers, by holding officials accountable, and unearthing the impact of their actions. Like all journalists at McClatchy, the Emerging News Reporter must have the desire to work (and play) well with others, and the skill to build audience loyalty, engagement and growth through compelling journalism reflective of our subscribers.

The ideal candidate must be able to juggle short breaking stories while working on longer pieces. This means pursuing their own stories as well as collaborating on stories with reporters in our Triangle communities. The reporter must be willing to build sources on and off the record to produce the exclusive journalism that will require readers to turn to us in a breaking-news or emerging news situation

This role will require a commitment to change — to constantly adapting to the ever-evolving ways in which our audience seeks out and interacts with journalism.  It will require enthusiastic participation in ongoing conversations about what’s working and what could work better, and an equally enthusiastic commitment to adapting accordingly.

The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill region is among the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the nation. Known as the Triangle, the area is home to major universities, state government, numerous corporate headquarters and fast-growing startups. Our journalists work in communities with vibrant choices for foodies, arts and music lovers and outdoors enthusiasts.

You’d be joining a newsroom with a strong reputation for doing top-tier journalism and treating colleagues with respect and empathy. This is a newsroom of high-achieving veteran journalists and talented newcomers. We offer ongoing training and plenty of fun events throughout the year. Our commitment to DEI initiatives is newsroomwide and genuine.
