NEWS REPORTER — city and county government emphasis


The Bakersfield Californian, an award-winning newspaper and website in California’s Central Valley, has an opening for a news reporter who will chiefly report on city and county government and politics. The reporter will work on deadlines throughout the day to produce stories and photos for our print edition,, social media, email alerts and e-edition. This person will report, write and research stories on any news or feature topic as needed. This reporter will contribute to our social media presence. We’re also looking for an education reporter.

The selected reporter must be able to:

• Carry out all the duties and responsibilities described above.

• Develop the city and county government beat and build sources in the community.

• Follow the best practices in journalism, Associated Press style and search engine optimization.

• Learn to use and effectively work in a content management system.

• Be well-organized with excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

Qualifications include: 

• A degree in journalism, communication or a related field is preferred. 

• Previous experience as a news reporter is required. Experience covering city and county government and politics is a plus, and clips showing evidence of this work are preferred. 

• A proven track record of handling both daily and enterprise news stories. 

• Valid CA drivers license with acceptable DMV record, independent transportation and insurance required.
