Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is located in the Strategic Planning and Inter-Agency Affairs Unit of UNODC in Vienna, Austria. Under the supervision of the Associate Programme Management Officer, the intern will:

  • Conduct research related to and support the work of the Unit on issues of relevance, in particular in relation to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, meaningful youth engagement, inter-agency activities as well as UNODC’s role in the context of UN development system reform;
  • Support the Unit with research and coordination in various cross-cutting areas pertaining to consolidating UNODC’s contributions to Secretary-General’s reports, reports to the Human Rights Council and other reports for system-wide requests for information and emerging issues;
  • Support the work of the Unit related to Results-Based Management (RBM);
  • Support the implementation of the Youth Empowerment Accelerator (YEA!) Framework and other youth mainstreaming-related tasks;
  • Contribute to the drafting and preparation of UNODC publications, briefing notes, background notes, reports, evaluations, and other internal documents, presentations, correspondences with Member State governments, talking points and speeches;
  • Support the design and layout of infographics, web pages, social media and presentations on various topics related to the work of the unit, including SharePoint pages, iSeek and website pages;
  • Assist with the technical / ICT arrangements for webinars or hybrid events. The Intern will further support the work of the Unit by performing other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Proof of enrollment or graduation should be attached to the Inspira application. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Please elaborate. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Teams. Knowledge of Canva, Adobe or other design tools is an asset. Please describe your competency using these software applications.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
