The Nogales International is an award-winning newspaper founded in Nogales, Arizona, in 1925. It is published on Tuesdays and Fridays and is a division of Wick Communications Company. Wick Communications is a third-generation family-owned community media company with newspapers, websites, magazines, and specialty publications nationwide.

Nogales is located on the U.S.-Mexico border. It is 60 miles south of Tucson, AZ, and 150 miles south of Phoenix, AZ. The Nogales International reports on issues affecting residents of Santa Cruz County, including Nogales, Rio Rico, Tumacacori, Tubac, Amado, Patagonia, Sonoita and Elgin. Articles about issues and activities in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, are also published.

Location: Nogales, AZ

Beat: Public Policy in Education on the Border

Position: 

Santa Cruz is the smallest county in Arizona, yet the impact of government decisions can have outsized ramifications on this border community’s school districts. For example, studies show that English learners assimilate more effectively when schools respect their culture and native languages. Yet Arizona clings to its decades-old English-Only law. The public policy reporter investigates how this and other government actions affect students and spotlights possible alternative approaches for improving outcomes in the classroom.

Three to five years of experience preferred
Fluent Spanish-speaker required.
Data journalism experience preferred.
Multimedia media – video experience preferred.

Salary and Benefits:
$41,000 – $45,000

All full-time employees are eligible for company benefits, including vacation (accrued at the rate of .0231 hours worked, excluding overtime). We also offer health, dental and vision benefits, sick leave, company holidays and a 401(k) plan after 90 days. Work-related mileage is paid at 32 cents per mile.

Moving Stipend:
The Nogales International offers up to $500 in relocation expense reimbursement upon presentation of receipts or other forms of expense verification.
