Description:
Undercurrent News, a subscription-driven news and data service focused on the global seafood sector, seeks an experienced deputy editor to help lead its Americas reporting team.
The deputy will help the Americas editor manage a team of three reporters in the US and Canada and assist in directing the coverage of Latin America by two Spanish-speaking journalists based in Europe. In addition, there will be a need to edit stories from reporters in Asia for whom English is a second language.
Our UK-based business, founded and run by journalists, generates a large portion of its readership in the Americas, so the position is a vital one. The role is home-based and can be done in virtually any city or state across North America, allowing for lots of geographic mobility.
Our editorial focus is on seafood prices, supply, trade, policy, and mergers and acquisitions. So, the deputy editor will be directing the coverage of these topics from the team, in addition to editing their work.
Every morning, we send an Americas newsletter, which the deputy editor will help oversee. The newsletter includes original material from the team and relevant copy from other sources. The deputy editor will be expected to edit the team’s copy, as well as press releases and news from other sources.
Then, the deputy editor will help direct the news agenda from the team for the next day, in addition to producing original stories of their own. The deputy editor will also be responsible for overseeing breaking news stories in the time zone.
The deputy editor will also work closely with the company’s editorial director, head of data journalism and European editor on global coverage. In addition, the deputy will help produce podcasts, video interviews and other pieces of digital media.
Ideally, the candidate will have at least five years of editing experience at a business-to-business publication. A background in the seafood sector would be desirable but is not a must. We are looking for passion and dedication, and we can train you in the industry.
There will be some North American and global travel required in the role.
Please send a resume, a brief cover letter and two of your best clips to [email protected]. The cover letter should succinctly outline what you would bring to the role.
We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds.
