Want to be a part of an exciting local news startup in West Los Angeles and the cities that make it up?

We’re looking for a local government and politics reporter who can cover the large area of West Los Angeles whose beat would include the following:  

  • Stories of cultural significance or growing social movements
  • Non-elected persons of significance we should know about
  • City of Los Angeles
    • Mayor, City Attorney, City Controller
    • Councilmember Katy Young Yaroslavsky, Council District 5
    • Councilmember Traci Park, Council District 11
    • To a lesser Extent:
      • Councilmember Heather Hutt, Council District 10
      • Councilmember Nithya Raman, Council District 4
      • Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, Council District 13
    • City of Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils (~17 on the Westside)
    • LADWP
    • Metro
    • LAPD/LASD   
    • Los Angeles Political Dynamics
    • The donor class
    • City council campaigns
  • City Council, Municipal Government, and local campaigns for
    • Beverly Hills
    • Culver City
    • Inglewood
    • Malibu
    • Santa Monica
    • West Hollywood
  • County of Los Angeles
    • Supervisor Holly Mitchell, District 2
    • Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, District 3
    • LA County Sheriff Robert Luna

Until greater funding can be secured, we will PAY on a FEE PER ARTICLE basis (W-9/1099):

  • $50 — Cover and write up important council meetings, city department big news, major announcements, or issues facing LADWP, Metro, LAPD
  • $75 – Features on unique subject or subject within the scope above, city or county departments, a political profile with elected leader’s cooperation, Legislator’s annual legislative agenda, or on location reporting of political happenings,
  • $100 – Exclusives/Scoops that fit our subject guidelines, or a collaboration on an Editorial
  • $1,000 – Monthly Maximum


  • 67 Cents per mile on approved travel over 15 miles
  • Up to $400 in Research Stipend to study the news beats above ($20/hour up to 20 hours)

Points of Note for Applicants

  • Candidates from diverse backgrounds, differing abilities, LGBTQ+, and women are most strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Candidates will still be expected to interview over Zoom if contacted by Westside Voice’s Publisher
  • The job is marked “Hybrid” because there is no office, and the applicant is remote, but the reporter MUST live in L.A. The applicant must have a working knowledge of L.A.

All articles must be pitched/discussed with the Publisher before work is approved. Westside Voice will try to create as much of a newsroom environment as possible through regular Zoom meetings and occasional in-person opportunities.
