Job Title: Metro Editor

Location: New Orleans, LA

Company: The Times-Picayune |

Position Overview:

We are seeking a dynamic Metro Editor to lead our city and suburban news coverage. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the nuances of metro journalism, a passion for local news, and the ability to guide a diverse team of reporters and editors. The right candidate will be a strong writer and compassionate leader who can juggle the responsibilities of covering a fast-paced news town. Candidates should also be committed to growing our reach — and our subscribers — through multiple platforms, including our website, social media, newsletters, and yes, still in print.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management:
    • Oversee a metro news team that covers a 7-parish area, including hiring, training, and mentoring both reporters and editors.
    • Directly supervise the city politics and government team, as well as other city-focused reporters.
    • Collaborate heavily with the digital team to produce innovative and engaging content that builds audiences and subscribers.
    • Assign stories, manage workflow, and ensure timely, accurate, and engaging coverage.
    • Use audience analytics to understand reader interests and adapt coverage to meet their needs.
  • Editorial Strategy:
    • Work with the editor and managing editor to implement strategic initiatives that align with the organization’s goals.
    • Identify key stories and trends that are relevant to our readership and prioritize coverage accordingly.
    • Balance breaking news with in-depth enterprise and news features.
  • Content Oversight:
    • Ensure all content meets the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and clarity.
    • Edit articles for substance, style, and tone, providing constructive feedback to reporters.
  • Engagement:
    • Build and maintain relationships with community leaders, stakeholders, and sources to enhance coverage.
    • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture within the newsroom.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a newsroom environment, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
  • Exceptional editing skills and a keen eye for detail.
  • Proven ability to manage and inspire a diverse team of journalists.
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to make quick, informed decisions.
  • Deep understanding of digital journalism and the evolving media landscape.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
