Description:
We’re hiring a full-time news reporter. For the right candidate, this will be an editor-level position.
Because this historically gets ignored by candidates, we’re putting this in large, bold type: NO TELECOMMUTING. Please don’t apply unless you live in South Pinellas. We will neither consider nor respond to resumes from outside our coverage area.*
We need someone who can reliably cover city council meetings in South Pinellas, elections, and other government issues important to our readers. If hired as the editor, this position may have freelance reporters and/or paid interns under their umbrella of responsibilities.
Journalism or government experience and strong writing skills preferred; clips required.
Nice to have (but you’ll learn it if you don’t): WordPress, SEO, and inCopy. Not dealbreakers, but, you know, nice to have.
Send clips and vita, along with a brief email as to why you want to work for a hyperlocal newspaper, to [email protected].
The Gabber Newspaper serves South Pinellas as the oldest independently owned weekly newspaper in Florida. Our office is in the heart of Gulfport’s downtown. We report hyperlocal news, which can range from interviewing the newest member of the local police department to covering municipal elections. We have fun with what we do, but we’re serious about quality local journalism. And, because we know there’s a lot of downsized journos out there, don’t worry, we’re solvent.
We don’t offer benefits aside from a dog-friendly workplace and staff meals for breakfast and lunch at a Gulfport eatery (we pay for the meal, you tip the servers).
*The Gabber Newspaper’s coverage area includes Pinellas Park south to Tierra Verde.
